The flexible designs of the audio and video compression algorithms and joint development of core compression technology, system architecture and hardware platforms allows XVD™ technology to achieve an unprecedented level of efficiency for compression and streaming solutions, with optimal tradeoff between system performance and cost. The proprietary compression algorithm is continuously improved without a lengthy standardization process; it is also easily adaptable to various application and system requirements.
XVD™ codec technology is the result of more than 10 years of research and development. Both the video and audio algorithms are based on well-established signal compression techniques. Beyond that, they have been refined and enhanced to include several original innovations and features based on the human perceptual model. Thanks to these advances, the company believes that XVD™ technology provides the absolute best perceived video quality for compressed video/audio material across the entire range of digital media applications.
XVD™ video technology supports HD and SD formats and all source resolutions from 96x64 pixels for very limited bandwidth applications such as cell phones, up to 1920x1080 pixels for HD encoding.
XVD patented video codec is optimized for the human visual system and adds several unique features such as:
- Automatic scene-changing detection
- Object motion detection/estimation
- CBR/VBR bit-rate control with configurable window size to improve video quality at dramatically lower data rates
- Higher performance at significantly lower data rates, allowing many more channels to be carried in any chosen bandwidth
The XVD video codec was designed to achieve optimal performance on modern general-purpose DSP platforms and is evolving to take advantage of increasing computing power available for real-time applications and products. The current generation of XVD™ video compression technology provides better video quality at any given data rate than standards-based codecs (H.264 or VC-1) with four times lower encoding complexity (compared with H.264 Main Profile).
The XVD audio codec also provides high performance at significantly lower data rates, allowing many more audio channels to be carried in any chosen bandwidth. This is possible due to a sophisticated yet computationally efficient codec design with advanced features like variable non-uniform time/frequency resolution and independent time resolution in different frequency sub-bands.
XVD™ audio/video compression technology brings a new level of video transmission efficiency to broadcast markets and enables new ways to deliver video. Thanks to this technology’s video quality at low data rates, standard definition video can be transmitted over a single T1 line, and high definition video can be transmitted over a 5-7 Mbps link, reducing the cost of satellite backhaul, increasing range of microwave transmissions or even enabling HD delivery over broadband Internet connections.
