NHK has developed ultra small HV Real Time Encoder for emergency report
Realizing High definition IP transmission at low data rate with less deterioration in image quality
Tokyo - August 30, 2005 - NHK has co-developed with BHA and XVD corp. that the ultra small, lightweight and power-saving high-compression encoding and streaming system.
Usually, for emergency reports, NHK uses wireless link such as communication satellite or FPU for high definition live link and compress the 1.2Gpbs high definition data signal into approx. 30Mbps to 45Mbs depending on the bandwidth.
This system, utilizes XVD compression system and the preprocessing technology developed by NHK is mounted in the system to avoid image distortion, can compress high definition data signal into low bit-rate such as 3Mbps-10Mbps. This realizes high definition live link over broadband network like Internet.
This device has IP transmission relay function as one of the standard features, by carrying a camera and the device can enable us the immediate transmission of the contents of disasters. Therefore, if there is a network with broadband network is available, high definition live link from the building or underground mall is more likely to be realized which was very difficult to do with existing wireless systems.
The size of the device is 1/5 compared to other existing encoders and battery-driven can maintain its mobility in emergency situations. It is also expected to realize live broadcast with just a small staff at local TV stations.
NHK will continuously make efforts on developing communication and broadcasting equipments including high definition transmission system to provide more rapid and accurate information of emergencies
and disasters.
